Zabulon, a demon known from the infamous possessions of Loudun, is one of the most mysterious figures in demonology. The case of the Loudun possessions occurred in 1634 in a small French town, where several Ursuline nuns were believed to have been possessed by various demons. Among them was a lay sister whose terrifying affliction was attributed to Zabulon, an entity with a chilling reputation in the infernal hierarchy.
The events at Loudun began when the nuns of the Ursuline convent claimed to be under demonic attack, exhibiting extreme fits, convulsions, and speaking in tongues. Father Urbain Grandier, a local priest, was implicated in these disturbances. He was accused of making a pact with devils, including Zabulon, to cause the possessions. While many demons were named during the exorcisms and trials, Zabulon stood out due to the severity of the symptoms linked to his influence on the lay sister.
Zabulon was said to be an ancient demon of deception and discord, who specialized in corrupting the pious and turning religious devotion into fanaticism. In the case of the lay sister, witnesses described how she exhibited strange contortions and blasphemous speech. Father Grandier was eventually tried, tortured, and executed for sorcery, though historians debate the true nature of the events. Some argue that the possessions were a result of political and personal vendettas, while others maintain that supernatural forces, including Zabulon, played a significant role.
Today, the Loudun possessions, and Zabulon’s role in them, remain one of the most captivating and controversial episodes in the history of demonic possession.
