In Hindu mythology, Pretas are malevolent, ghostlike spirits that are often regarded with fear and dread. These demons are believed to animate dead bodies and are frequently found residing in cemeteries, creating an eerie and unsettling atmosphere. Moderately tall in stature, Pretas are condemned to a tormenting existence where they feed exclusively on filth and excrement, never finding satisfaction or relief from their insatiable hunger.

One of the most distinctive features of Pretas is their grotesque appearance. Some are depicted as wearing pigs' masks for faces, adding to their horrifying visage. Others are known to vomit fire, which paradoxically burns them away, contributing to their eternal suffering. Additionally, many Pretas inflict pain upon themselves by cutting and slashing their flesh with their fingernails, further illustrating their tormented state.

Popular belief holds that Pretas are the result of avaricious and greedy behavior during one's lifetime. It is thought that those who were excessively covetous and selfish may be reborn as Pretas, doomed to an existence of perpetual hunger and anguish. This serves as a moral warning in Hindu teachings, emphasizing the importance of generosity and compassion.

Among the various forms of Pretas, some are known as Yeaks, which are formidable giants that add an extra layer of terror to their already fearsome reputation. These Yeaks are significantly larger and more powerful than typical Pretas, making them especially dreaded by those who believe in their existence.

There are said to be 36 different classes of Pretas, each with unique characteristics and forms. Some appear as animated skeletons, devoid of flesh, and perpetually wandering in search of something they can never attain. These skeletal Pretas are perhaps the most haunting of all, representing the ultimate state of decay and desolation.

The concept of Pretas serves as a potent reminder of the consequences of immoral behavior and the importance of living a virtuous life. Their horrifying and pitiful existence is a stark contrast to the ideal of spiritual liberation and enlightenment sought in Hinduism. As such, Pretas occupy a significant place in Hindu demonology, embodying the fears and moral lessons of the culture.
